FAQs
It’s important to consider the size and ease of use. It’s most important that it is easy enough to use so that you can get the measurement as accurately as possible.
The size of the cuff must also fit your arm (or wrist) comfortably. They are semi-automatic devices that can be purchased at most drug stores and a prescription from your doctor is not needed. Ideally they should be checked for their accuracy before use.
It is most important that one is in a relaxed setting. Breath normally, stay calm, sit in a comfortable chair with legs uncrossed and feet flat on the ground. Avoid smoking, exercise or coffee prior to measuring BP. The cuff, once placed, should be at the level of the heart.
This will depend upon your healthcare provider. Initially, BP checks and log would need to be more frequent. Once your BP has stabilized through diet and / or medications, less frequent monitoring may be needed. Consult with your doctor or nurse.
Typically, BP is lower at night than during the day. It begins to rise a few hours before one wakes and peaks in the mid afternoon. It is very normal for the BP to fluctuate throughout the day.
Weight reduction, reducing dietary sodium, exercise, and alternative approaches such as yoga and meditation are all lifestyle changes that can lower BP.
