Peritoneal Dialysis
What is Peritoneal Dialysis?
Peritoneal Dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a form of dialysis that is done at home and uses the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter to clean your blood.
A cleansing fluid is gently infused into the abdomen through a soft catheter, where it absorbs waste and extra fluid before being drained.
PD is performed daily, either manually during the day or automatically overnight while you sleep.
This gentle, continuous process can closely mimic natural kidney function and allows many patients to maintain independence and flexibility in their daily lives.
Benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis
- Done at home – no regular trips to a dialysis center
- More flexibility and independence with daily schedules
- Gentler, continuous dialysis, which may feel easier on the body
- Fewer dietary and fluid restrictions for many patients
- Better preservation of remaining kidney function
- No needles required for treatments
- Easier to travel and maintain work or family routines
- Greater sense of control over one’s care
Considerations of Peritoneal Dialysis
- Requires daily treatments and personal responsibility
- Risk of infection (peritonitis) if sterile technique is not followed
- Requires storage space at home for supplies
- Not ideal for everyone, depending on prior abdominal surgery or medical condition
Understanding your dialysis options helps you choose the therapy that best fits your lifestyle, health needs, and goals.
